Trappist Westvleteren 12 (2015)
Style: Belgian Quad ABV: 10.2% IBU: none
The Trappist Westvleteren 12 Ale is the #1 rated beer in the world as far as quality, and consistency goes. It can be quite difficult to find and buy here in Victoria, BC. I was very lucky and a friend had a couple in his beer cellar that he was willing to part with for me and I am very thankful that he did. I originally picked up these two bottles to have for Melissa and I’s wedding. I was going to have one with my Best Man but the craziness got the best of me and I forgot them at the house so I figured I would just hold on for the next special occasion and then open one up and have a go and see what all the talk was about.
It pours very aromatic, with a chocolate brown color and a foamy white head that just lasts forever. I picked up strong notes of cherry, prunes, and raisins with caramel sweetness. I found for a high gravity ale that it did not have any heat to it, it was very well balanced. Not to say you don’t notice the strength but it really is a easy drinking Belgian Quad. This was my very first time trying a Trappist Ale from Westvleteren and I must say that I am very impressed. You can really get a sense of the passion put into the ale by the nuances that just get better with every sip. If you are able to find a bottle of this you can expect to pay at least $20+ for a 12oz bottle but IMHO it is absolutely well worth it.
