Hammer Barrel Aged Imperial Stout
Imperial Stouts are no laughing matter and then to barrel age it in a bourbon barrel! This imperial stout pours a dark brown to almost black color with a dark tan head that goes away fairly quick with a strong aroma of vanilla, plums, and roasted malts and molasses. It’s really quite a strong aroma too, really jumping out of the bottle as I popped the top!
The flavor is bourbon, and vanilla to start with a mild bitterness and then a sweet finish that is almost like a treacle caramel taste to it. I also find that the barrel adds some nice roastyness and earthiness to it so I am interested to try out a non barrel aged version of this stout.
I think overall that the whisky really comes through a little too strong and dominates the flavors but with the nice complex body it does work well.
I would recommend this beer to people who enjoy a stouts, and abby ales because the flavors are quite pronounced and a little intense
